Queer and Alternative is all about thrashy, trashy and occasionally queeny music, teenagers with spikey, pikey hair and piercings. It is now held at A Bar Called Barry, just around the corner from the previous venue - The Builders Arms in Fitzroy.

The night we were there, having consumed vast quantities of beer to help us fit in (it didn't work, but at least we didn't care as much), there was a huge screen playing back to back episodes of Family Guy. I expect there was a good reason for this, but no-one seemed to want to tell us.

A friendly, young crowd bounced around the dancefloor looking cool and generally proving that being young, gay and alternative can, once a week at least, be a lot of fun.

A Bar Called Barry seems to be the perfect venue... On the ground floor a big ballroom style dance area, with the DJ up in the gods overseeing his punters. A balcony to get a better view if you've lost your friends, and an upstairs back bar to retreat to if it's all too much and you want to relax.
