Eurovision's duff note
Can 2009's host country justify Moscow Pride ban?

Eurovision's duff note

Wednesday, 28 May 2008

Pride London has reacted with surprise at the news that Moscow will host next year's Eurovision Song Contest after Russia's 2007 entry from Dima Bilan won on Saturday. The contest, whose voting has become noticeably political in recenpride lont years, is a particular favourite of the LGBT community.

Moscow has banned its LGBT community from holding a Pride event for the last two years. Those attempting to ignore these bans and celebrate, including visitors from overseas, have seen themselves subjected to extreme police brutality and arrest.

Pride organisers in Moscow have now appealed to the European Court to overturn the city authorities' ban and allow Pride to take place later this month on the 31st May .

Colm Howard-Lloyd, a Director of Pride London commented: "How can you let a city that denies basic human rights to LGBT people host the content next year? I know thousands of people hosted Eurovision parties to celebrate the event but I'm not sure how comfortable it will be in 2009 to get as excited about Eurovision when we know the host city beats-up and detains people because of their sexuality."

The city of Moscow banned Pride in 2006 and 2007 citing Article 11 of the European Convention. An appeal to the European Court was made in January. More information can be found in English at www.gayrussia.ru/en/
